Which aircraft dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki?
Answer
Bockscar
Answer
Bockscar
Bockscar was the aircraft that dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki.
Bockscar was a United States Army Air Forces B-29 Superfortress bomber flown by Major Charles W. Sweeney. On 9 August 1945, it carried Fat Man from Tinian in the Mariana Islands for the second wartime atomic-bomb mission.
The mission’s primary target was Kokura Arsenal. Heavy cloud and smoke prevented the crew from making the required visual attack, so Bockscar moved to its secondary target, Nagasaki. The bomb exploded over the Urakami Valley at approximately 11:02 a.m. local time.
Bockscar is frequently confused with Enola Gay, the B-29 that dropped Little Boy on Hiroshima three days earlier. The Great Artiste supported both atomic-bomb missions but did not drop either weapon. Straight Flush was a weather-reconnaissance aircraft used during the Hiroshima mission.
