Which aircraft dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki in 1945?
Answer
Bockscar
Answer
Bockscar
Bockscar dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki in 1945.
The B-29 Superfortress carried the plutonium implosion weapon Fat Man during the mission on August 9, 1945. Major Charles W. Sweeney commanded the aircraft. Nagasaki was not the crew’s first intended target that morning; poor visibility led them to attack the secondary target after the primary target, Kokura, could not be clearly seen.
The aircraft’s name is officially styled Bockscar, a pun on the name of its regular commander, Captain Frederick C. Bock. It is sometimes incorrectly written as “Boxcar,” which was not the aircraft’s official name. Bockscar and Enola Gay are often confused because both were B-29s used in the atomic missions, but they flew on different dates and carried different weapons. Bockscar’s mission occurred on the same day the Soviet Union opened its offensive against Japan in Manchuria.
