Which African safari animal is the only penguin species that breeds in Africa?

The story behind the answer

The African penguin is the only penguin species that breeds in Africa.

Its scientific name is Spheniscus demersus, and it lives along the southwestern coast of Africa, especially in Namibia and South Africa. Unlike the Antarctic penguins many people picture, it occupies a relatively mild marine climate.

African penguins are also called jackass penguins because their loud calls resemble a donkey’s bray. They nest on coastal islands and mainland sites, where they lay eggs and raise chicks before returning to the sea to hunt.

The species is adapted to warm conditions: its pink facial skin helps release excess heat, while its dense feathers provide insulation in cold water. It is often confused with the Humboldt penguin, another banded penguin in the same genus, but Humboldt penguins breed along the Pacific coast of South America.
