Which African safari animal is also known as the Cape hunting dog?

The story behind the answer

The African wild dog is also known as the Cape hunting dog. Its scientific name is Lycaon pictus, meaning “painted wolf,” a reference to the irregular brown, black, white, and yellow markings on its coat.

African wild dogs are highly social canids that live in cooperative packs. Pack members help care for pups, and adults may regurgitate food for young animals and other members that stayed behind. Their large, rounded ears and four toes on each foot distinguish them from many other African canids.

The name “Cape hunting dog” is historical and does not mean the animal is restricted to the Cape region. The species once ranged widely across sub-Saharan Africa but now survives in fragmented populations because of habitat loss, disease, road traffic, and conflict with people. It is listed as Endangered, making protected areas and connected habitats especially important.
