Which African lake is the world’s second-deepest lake after Lake Baikal?

The story behind the answer

Lake Tanganyika is the world’s second-deepest lake after Lake Baikal.

Lake Tanganyika lies in the East African Rift and is shared by Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Zambia. It reaches a maximum depth of about 1,470 metres (4,823 feet), making it the deepest lake in Africa and the second-deepest known lake worldwide.

The lake is also among the oldest and longest freshwater lakes on Earth. Its great age and isolation have allowed many endemic species to evolve, especially cichlid fish. The lake’s long, narrow basin reflects tectonic activity in the African Rift system. Lake Tanganyika is sometimes confused with Lake Victoria, which is Africa’s largest lake by surface area but is much shallower. It is also distinct from Lake Malawi, another deep rift lake farther south.
