Which African crocodile is the continent’s largest reptile?

The story behind the answer

The Nile crocodile is Africa’s largest reptile.

Adult Nile crocodiles commonly reach several metres in length, and exceptional individuals can be considerably larger. They are found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, especially in rivers, lakes, swamps, and seasonal waterways. Their range also includes Madagascar in some classifications and population accounts.

Nile crocodiles are powerful aquatic predators with long snouts, muscular tails, and eyes and nostrils positioned high on the head. This arrangement lets one remain mostly submerged while watching and breathing at the surface.

The species is an ambush hunter rather than a fast-distance swimmer. It takes fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals, including animals that come to drink. It is sometimes confused with the smaller West African crocodile, whose classification and historical range have caused identification disputes.
