Which African country completely surrounds the nation of Lesotho?
Answer
South Africa
Answer
South Africa
South Africa completely surrounds the nation of Lesotho.
Lesotho is an enclaved country located in the Maloti Mountains of southern Africa. It is one of only three sovereign states completely surrounded by another country, alongside Vatican City and San Marino, both of which are surrounded by Italy.
The territory became a British protectorate called Basutoland in 1868 and gained independence as the Kingdom of Lesotho on 4 October 1966. Its capital and largest city is Maseru, near the western border with South Africa.
Lesotho’s high elevation has earned it the nickname “Kingdom in the Sky”; its lowest point is above 1,000 meters, making it the world’s highest low point for a country. Although it is geographically enclosed by South Africa, Lesotho remains a separate sovereign state with its own government, currency, and national institutions.
