Which African bird is scientifically named Sagittarius serpentarius?
Answer
Secretarybird
Answer
Secretarybird
The African bird scientifically named Sagittarius serpentarius is the secretarybird.
The secretarybird is a tall, long-legged raptor found across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Its scientific name combines Sagittarius, meaning “archer,” with serpentarius, meaning “snake-related” or “snake-eating.” The name reflects the bird’s reputation for hunting snakes and other reptiles on foot.
Unlike most birds of prey, secretarybirds spend much of their time walking through grassland and savanna rather than hunting from the air. They use powerful legs to stamp on prey, including snakes, lizards, insects, and small mammals. Their long eyelashes and crest feathers contribute to their distinctive appearance.
The species is the only living member of both its genus and family. Its conservation status is generally listed as endangered because agricultural expansion, fires, and habitat conversion have reduced suitable open-country habitat in parts of its range.
