The cheetah has a black “tear mark” running from each eye toward its mouth. These dark facial lines are among the species’ most recognizable features and are especially visible against its golden coat.
Scientists commonly suggest that the marks may help reduce glare from sunlight, much like the dark paint used beneath the eyes by some athletes. They may also help the animal focus visually on prey during daylight pursuits, although their exact function is not fully settled.
Cheetahs differ from lions and leopards in both appearance and build. They have a slender body, small rounded head, long legs and a spotted coat. Most adults lack the heavy mane of male lions or the rosette patterns typical of leopards.
