Which actress won the Best Actress Oscar for 'The Silence of the Lambs'?

The story behind the answer

Which actress won the Best Actress Oscar for The Silence of the Lambs? Jodie Foster won the Academy Award for Best Actress for playing Clarice Starling.

Foster’s performance as the young FBI trainee earned her the Oscar at the 64th Academy Awards in 1992. The film became only the third movie at that time to win the five major Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. Foster’s co-star Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor as the imprisoned serial killer Hannibal Lecter.

The award was Foster’s second Best Actress Oscar. She had previously won for The Accused (1988), in which she portrayed rape survivor Sarah Tobias. Her Silence of the Lambs victory therefore made her one of the relatively small group of performers with multiple lead-acting Oscars.

A common mix-up is to credit Susan Sarandon, who was nominated for the same year for Thelma & Louise. Holly Hunter and Kathy Bates also won Best Actress Oscars in other years, but neither won for this film.
