Which actress voiced the Evil Queen?

The story behind the answer

Lucille La Verne voiced the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

La Verne was an experienced American stage and screen actress who had appeared in silent films and early talkies before joining Disney’s groundbreaking production. She supplied the Queen’s voice as well as the voice of the transformed old peddler, or Witch, who tempts Snow White with the poisoned apple.

According to the film’s production history, Disney auditioned more than a dozen actresses for the Queen before selecting La Verne. Animators initially felt her Witch voice was too smooth, but she reportedly removed her false teeth during the audition, creating the harsher, raspier sound associated with the disguise.

The other options are actresses associated with different Disney princess roles: Mary Costa voiced Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, Ilene Woods voiced Cinderella, and Adriana Caselotti voiced Snow White. La Verne’s work in Snow White was her final film performance; she died in 1942. The film premiered in Los Angeles on December 21, 1937, before its wider U.S. release in 1938.
