Which actress played Tracy Lord in the 1940 film 'The Philadelphia Story'?
Answer
Katharine Hepburn
Answer
Katharine Hepburn
Katharine Hepburn played Tracy Lord in the 1940 film The Philadelphia Story.
Hepburn had already played Tracy in Philip Barry’s original 1939 Broadway play, which Barry wrote specifically for her. She helped secure the film rights and used the project as a carefully planned comeback after several commercial failures had led theater owners to label her “box-office poison.”
Directed by George Cukor, the film paired Hepburn with Cary Grant as her ex-husband, C. K. Dexter Haven, and James Stewart as reporter Macaulay Connor. The story follows Tracy, a wealthy Philadelphia socialite whose plans for a second marriage become complicated when her former husband and two journalists arrive to cover the wedding.
The film became one of 1940’s major successes and is a classic example of the “comedy of remarriage” genre. Hepburn received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, while Stewart won Best Actor. MGM later remade the story as the musical High Society, with Grace Kelly as the equivalent of Tracy Lord.
