Which actress played Rebecca Howe on Cheers?

The story behind the answer

Kirstie Alley played Rebecca Howe on Cheers.

Rebecca Howe was introduced in 1987 when Shelley Long's character, Diane Chambers, left the series. Alley portrayed Rebecca as a driven, image-conscious businesswoman who worked for the Lillian Corporation, the company that acquired Cheers. Although Rebecca initially had authority over the bar, Sam Malone eventually regained ownership and hired her in a different management role.

The character's relationship with Sam became one of the show's major later storylines. Rebecca often tried to maintain professional control while dealing with her attraction to Sam, his schemes, and the unpredictable regulars at the bar. Her personality and comic style differed sharply from Diane's, making her a replacement character rather than a continuation of Diane's exact role.

Viewers sometimes confuse Rebecca with other prominent women on Cheers. Rhea Perlman played waitress Carla Tortelli, Shelley Long played Diane Chambers, and Bebe Neuwirth played psychiatrist Lilith Sternin. Alley remained with Cheers through its 1993 finale and received multiple award nominations for the role.
