Which actress played Mary Morstan in Sherlock?

The story behind the answer

Amanda Abbington played Mary Morstan in BBC’s Sherlock. She first appears in the third-series premiere, “The Empty Hearse,” as John Watson’s new partner and later becomes his wife.

The series reimagines Mary as more than Sherlock Holmes’s traditional romantic-era character. This version is a former intelligence operative and assassin who has adopted a quieter life as a nurse. Her concealed past becomes central to the third and fourth series, especially after Sherlock uncovers the truth.

Abbington’s casting also created a notable on-screen connection: she played Mary opposite Martin Freeman, who played John Watson, and the two were partners in real life when Sherlock began. Mary’s character is frequently confused with Molly Hooper, played by Louise Brealey, or Irene Adler, played by Lara Pulver; neither actress played Mary.

Mary’s story continues through “The Sign of Three,” where she marries John with Sherlock serving as best man, and “The Six Thatchers,” where her former life catches up with her.
