Which actress played Kathie Moffat in Out of the Past?

The story behind the answer

Jane Greer played Kathie Moffat in the 1947 film noir Out of the Past.

Greer’s Kathie is one of noir’s memorable femme fatales: intelligent, elusive, and seemingly capable of betrayal at any moment. She becomes entangled with Jeff Bailey, played by Robert Mitchum, whose attempt to escape his criminal past is disrupted when Kathie reappears in his life.

Directed by Jacques Tourneur, Out of the Past is celebrated for its fatalistic plot, shadowy visual style, and morally compromised characters. Greer’s performance is central to the film’s uncertainty because Kathie’s motives remain difficult to read even when the story reveals more about her past.

Greer had begun in entertainment as a big-band singer and model before moving into film. She later appeared with Mitchum again in The Big Steal. In 1984’s Against All Odds, a remake of Out of the Past, Greer returned in a different role—as the mother of the character she had played in the original.
