Hugh Laurie won the 2006 Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama for House, M.D. He received the award for his performance as Gregory House, the show’s brilliant but difficult diagnostician.
Laurie’s portrayal combined sarcasm, physical discomfort, musical ability, and flashes of vulnerability. The performance was especially notable because Laurie is English while House is written as an American physician; Laurie used an American accent for the role. His work helped make the series an international success.
Laurie won the same Golden Globe category again in 2007. The 2006 award is sometimes confused with later Emmy nominations or with the show’s other honors. House, M.D. earned major recognition for both acting and writing, but Laurie’s first Golden Globe victory came at the 63rd Golden Globe Awards in January 2006.
