Which actor voices Smaug in Peter Jackson's Hobbit films?

The story behind the answer

Benedict Cumberbatch voices Smaug in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films. He also supplied the dragon’s performance capture, helping shape Smaug’s facial expressions, movements, and imposing physical presence on screen.

Smaug is the dragon who seized Erebor and its immense treasure from the dwarves. Cumberbatch’s major Smaug performance appears in The Desolation of Smaug, the trilogy’s second film, where Bilbo enters the Lonely Mountain and attempts to outwit the dragon. The actor also performed the Necromancer, later revealed as Sauron, creating two very different antagonists in the same series.

Andy Serkis, another likely mix-up, plays Gollum and provides his motion-capture performance. Hugo Weaving plays Elrond, while Christopher Lee plays Saruman. Smaug’s design was created digitally by Weta Digital, but Cumberbatch’s voice and physical acting were central to giving the dragon his distinctive intelligence, menace, and theatrical personality.
