Which actor plays James Wilson, House’s oncologist friend, in House M.D.?

The story behind the answer

Robert Sean Leonard plays James Wilson in House M.D. Wilson is an oncologist at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital and Gregory House’s closest friend throughout much of the series.

Wilson’s medical specialty is oncology, the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. His compassionate bedside manner and concern for patients contrast with House’s abrasive style, although Wilson sometimes enables House’s risky behavior or becomes frustrated by his friend’s choices.

Leonard was already known for film and stage work before joining the series. He played Neil Perry in the 1989 film Dead Poets Society and received a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway revival of The Invention of Love. House M.D. gave him a long-running television role.

Wilson’s friendship with House is one of the show’s main emotional anchors. Their relationship includes arguments, practical jokes, professional disagreements, and moments of loyalty. Wilson is not House’s supervisor, and he does not lead the Diagnostic Medicine department; his role is an oncologist and colleague who remains personally close to House.
