Which actor plays Captain Raymond Holt?

Andre Braugher plays Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Holt is introduced in the pilot as the new commanding officer of Brooklyn's fictional 99th Precinct. His disciplined, formal leadership style immediately clashes with Jake Peralta's immature but highly effective detective work. Over time, their relationship develops into one of the show's central friendships.

Braugher was already acclaimed for dramatic roles, especially Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, before taking on the comic role of Holt. His restrained delivery and deadpan reactions became a defining part of the series' humor. A common mix-up is confusing the actor with Holt's husband, Kevin Cozner, who is played by Marc Evan Jackson.

Holt is notable within the story as the NYPD's first openly gay Black police captain. Braugher remained a principal cast member throughout the show's eight-season run, which ended in 2021.
