Which actor played Sherlock Holmes in the BBC television series Sherlock?

The story behind the answer

Benedict Cumberbatch played Sherlock Holmes in the BBC television series Sherlock.

Sherlock premiered in 2010 and relocated Doyle’s detective stories to contemporary London. Cumberbatch portrayed Holmes as a highly intelligent, socially difficult consulting detective who uses smartphones, online searches, and modern forensic methods while retaining the character’s observational brilliance.

Martin Freeman played Dr John Watson, Holmes’s veteran companion and the series’ main narrator. Their partnership forms the emotional and investigative center of the programme. The series was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, who adapted familiar characters, plots, and clues for the twenty-first century.

Cumberbatch’s casting is sometimes confused with Robert Downey Jr., who played Holmes in the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel. Jeremy Brett played Holmes in the long-running Granada television adaptation. These are separate screen portrayals of the same literary detective.
