Which actor played Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter film series?
Answer
Robbie Coltrane
Answer
Robbie Coltrane
Robbie Coltrane played Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter film series.
Coltrane portrayed Hagrid in all eight Harry Potter films, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001. Hagrid is Hogwarts’ gamekeeper and a half-giant who becomes one of Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s loyal adult allies. Coltrane’s performance helped define the character’s warmth, humor, protectiveness, and occasional clumsiness.
The role is sometimes confused with other major adult performances in the films. Richard Harris played Albus Dumbledore in the first two films, while Michael Gambon took over the role from the third film onward. Alan Rickman played Severus Snape. None of those actors played Hagrid.
Coltrane was a prominent Scottish actor whose other work included the television series Cracker and the James Bond films GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough. He died in 2022, but his Hagrid performance remains part of all eight original film adaptations.
