Which actor played Rick Deckard in Blade Runner?

The story behind the answer

Harrison Ford played Rick Deckard in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Released in 1982, the film adapts Philip K. Dick’s 1968 science-fiction novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Ford’s Deckard is a former police officer brought back to work as a blade runner, a specialist assigned to track down and “retire” escaped replicants.

Deckard investigates four replicants who have returned to Earth from off-world colonies. His assignment takes him through a dark, rain-soaked Los Angeles filled with corporate power, artificial beings and questions about memory and identity. Ford’s restrained performance helped make Deckard one of science fiction cinema’s most recognizable protagonists.

The character is more straightforwardly human in Dick’s novel, but the film deliberately leaves Deckard’s identity uncertain. Clues added or emphasized in later versions, especially the 1992 Director’s Cut and 2007 Final Cut, encouraged viewers to consider whether Deckard himself might be a replicant. Ford reprised the role in Blade Runner 2049, which was released in 2017.
