Which actor played Inspector Morse in the British television series Inspector Morse?

The story behind the answer

John Thaw played Inspector Morse in the British television series Inspector Morse. The series adapted Colin Dexter’s novels about the Oxford detective and ran from 1987 to 2000.

Morse is a highly educated, opera-loving detective chief inspector whose brilliance is balanced by impatience and personal flaws. Thaw’s performance made the character one of British television’s defining detectives. Kevin Whately played Sergeant Lewis, Morse’s dependable partner and investigative counterpoint.

The programme was filmed largely in Oxford, and the city’s colleges, streets, libraries, and riverside locations became central to its identity. Although the cases are fictional, the series used recognizable Oxford institutions and landscapes to create a strong sense of place.

The role is sometimes confused with Thaw’s later appearance as Jack Regan in The Sweeney. Inspector Morse is the performance that established him internationally as a television detective, and Whately later led the spin-off Lewis.
