Elijah Wood played Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Wood portrays Frodo as the hobbit entrusted with carrying the One Ring from the Shire to Mount Doom, where it can be destroyed.
Wood was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1981 and began acting professionally as a child. His performance made him internationally famous, especially because the role required Frodo to change from a sheltered hobbit into a determined but increasingly burdened traveler. The character's emotional exhaustion becomes especially clear as the Ring's influence grows stronger.
The film trilogy includes The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, released from 2001 through 2003. Viewers sometimes confuse Frodo's actor with Sean Astin, who played Samwise Gamgee, Frodo's closest companion, or Dominic Monaghan, who played Merry. Orlando Bloom played the elf Legolas, not a hobbit.
