André Morell played Dr John Watson in the 1959 film The Hound of the Baskervilles.
The British Hammer Film Productions adaptation stars Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes and Morell as Watson. It was directed by Terence Fisher and presents the Baskerville legend as a Gothic mystery, with atmospheric settings, family history, and the threatening moorland landscape central to the film’s tone.
Morell’s Watson is notably capable and serious, differing from the comic or bumbling interpretation associated with some earlier screen versions. Christopher Lee plays Sir Henry Baskerville, while other important roles include Christopher Lee’s future fellow Hammer performers.
The film is based on Doyle’s 1902 novel, but it makes changes to characters and events for cinematic effect. It should not be confused with the 1939 film starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
