Which actor played Django in the 1966 Italian Western 'Django'?

The story behind the answer

Franco Nero played Django in the 1966 Italian Western Django.

Directed by Sergio Corbucci, the film follows a drifter who becomes involved in a violent conflict between Confederate Red Shirts and Mexican revolutionaries. Django’s most recognizable image is his black-clad figure dragging a coffin through a muddy frontier town, a striking opening that helped define the film’s grim style.

Nero was only 23 when he was cast. To make him appear older and more imposing, the production emphasized stubble, artificial facial lines, and a black Union uniform. His voice was dubbed in the original release, as was common in Italian Westerns, and the soundtrack was composed by Luis Bacalov.

A common mix-up is confusing Nero with actors from unofficial Django-branded films. More than 30 pseudo-sequels followed, but Nero returned as Django in the official 1987 sequel Django Strikes Again. He also made a cameo in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.
