Which actor first played James Bond in the 1962 film Dr. No? The answer is Sean Connery.
Connery was the first actor to portray Ian Fleming’s British secret agent in a theatrical James Bond film. In Dr. No, Bond is sent to Jamaica to investigate the disappearance of fellow agent John Strangways, leading him to the island headquarters of the villainous Dr. No.
Directed by Terence Young, Dr. No was the first film in Eon Productions’ Bond series, although it adapted Fleming’s sixth Bond novel. Producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman chose Connery, a relatively unfamiliar Scottish actor at the time, to give Bond a forceful physical presence and a more rugged edge than some of the other actors considered for the role.
The film introduced several elements that became Bond trademarks, including the gun-barrel opening, glamorous locations, espionage gadgets, and the criminal organization SPECTRE. Connery went on to play Bond in six official Eon films, beginning with From Russia with Love and ending with Diamonds Are Forever, with one later non-Eon return in Never Say Never Again. David Niven, George Lazenby, and Roger Moore played Bond later, not first.
