Which act won Video of the Year in 2004 for “Hey Ya!”?

The story behind the answer

OutKast won Video of the Year at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards for “Hey Ya!”.

The victory capped a major year for the Atlanta duo, whose double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below had made them one of the biggest acts in popular music. “Hey Ya!” was an inventive, highly stylized video directed by Bryan Barber, built around a fictional television performance and multiple versions of André 3000.

OutKast’s win is sometimes confused with Jay-Z’s “99 Problems,” which also had a prominent night and won several craft awards. OutKast itself took four Moonmen for “Hey Ya!”, including Video of the Year, Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Special Effects, and Best Art Direction.

The song’s success also helped make OutKast the first hip-hop act to win the Grammy for Album of the Year, although that Grammy honor came later, in 2004, for The Love Below/Speakerboxxx.
