Which academy expelled Salvador Dalí in 1926?

The story behind the answer

The Royal Academy of San Fernando expelled Salvador Dalí in 1926.

Dalí entered Madrid’s Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, usually translated as the Royal Academy of San Fernando, in 1922. He studied drawing and painting there while developing friendships with future cultural figures, including Federico García Lorca and Luis Buñuel.

In 1926, shortly before his final examinations, Dalí declared that no member of the examining committee was competent to judge him. The academy expelled him, ending his formal studies there. He had already built a reputation for technical skill and an independent attitude.

The expulsion did not end Dalí’s artistic education. He traveled, studied the work of earlier masters, and encountered modern movements in Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris. The academy is often confused with Madrid’s broader art institutions, but San Fernando is the specific school involved in the expulsion.
