TGIF made Full House a flagship show of ABC’s Friday-night programming block in 1989. The initials were promoted as “Thank Goodness It’s Funny,” although they also echoed the familiar phrase “Thank God It’s Friday.”
Full House had already premiered on ABC in 1987 and had built an audience through its early Friday scheduling. When ABC launched TGIF in September 1989, the family sitcom became one of the block’s central programs. Its family-friendly stories and broad ensemble fit the network’s strategy of grouping sitcoms into a recognizable Friday-night destination.
TGIF was not a television network or a separate channel; it was a programming block. Other shows associated with its early years included Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, and Just the Ten of Us. Full House eventually moved to Tuesday nights for its fifth season, so it was not part of the block for the entire run. That scheduling change is why some viewers remember it as a Friday show while others associate it with Tuesdays.
