The longest river in Jamaica, at about 92.8 km, is the Rio Minho.

The Rio Minho rises in the Mocho Mountains near the geographic centre of Jamaica and flows generally south-southwest through Clarendon Parish. It reaches the Caribbean Sea at Carlisle Bay, west of Portland Point, the island’s southernmost point. Its course makes it Jamaica’s longest river by the standard national comparison.

The town of May Pen stands on the river’s banks, and the Rio Minho basin occupies a substantial part of central Clarendon. The river’s headwaters begin at roughly 706 metres above sea level before descending toward the coast. Like many Jamaican rivers, its flow varies with seasonal rainfall and the island’s rugged limestone terrain.

The Rio Minho is often confused with the Black River, which is famous for its extensive wetlands, wildlife and navigable lower reaches. Rio Cobre is important near Spanish Town, while Martha Brae is associated with rafting and tourism. Those rivers are well known, but each is shorter than the Rio Minho.
