Which 20th-century sculpture by Constantin Brâncuși is a tall, repeating geometric column in Târgu Jiu, Romania?

The story behind the answer

Endless Column is Constantin Brâncuși’s tall geometric sculpture in Târgu Jiu, Romania.

Brâncuși created the monument in 1938 as part of a memorial ensemble dedicated to Romanian soldiers who died in World War I. The column consists of repeating rhomboidal modules stacked vertically, producing the impression that the form continues beyond its visible height.

The work is about 29.3 metres tall and is made of cast iron modules threaded onto a central steel core. It forms one part of a larger axis with the Table of Silence and the Gate of the Kiss. Although the column is often described as infinite, its repeated form is a physical monument with a defined height. The Târgu Jiu ensemble is among Brâncuși’s most important public works.
