The cent was not struck for circulation in the 2026 Semiquincentennial program.
The 2026 cent was produced only for Mint sets sold to collectors at a premium, rather than being struck for ordinary circulation. Its inclusion in collector products allowed the Mint to recognize the anniversary while avoiding a new circulating production run for the denomination.
The cent still formed part of the broader 1776~2026 coinage story. Unlike the commemorative redesigns on several other denominations, it retained the current-series design and used the dual anniversary date. The nickel followed the same general approach, while the dime, five quarters, half dollar and dollar received anniversary-related designs.
This distinction is easy to miss because “coinage program” can refer both to coins made for circulation and to collector-only products. The Semiquincentennial program included both categories. Special silver and gold pieces were also struck, and some non-circulating issues reproduced historic U.S. coin designs.
