Answer
Fire of Love
Answer
Fire of Love
The 2022 documentary that follows volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft is *Fire of Love*.
Directed by Sara Dosa, the film is built largely from the Kraffts’ extraordinary archive of photographs and motion-picture footage. The French couple combined scientific research with filmmaking, often approaching active volcanoes to document lava flows, eruptions, and volcanic landscapes in vivid detail.
Katia studied physics and chemistry, while Maurice studied geology. They met as students at the University of Strasbourg, married in 1970, and made volcanoes both their profession and their shared subject. Their work helped scientists and the public see volcanic activity at close range, although their proximity to eruptions also made their expeditions exceptionally dangerous.
The film ultimately follows their final expedition to Japan’s Mount Unzen. On June 3, 1991, Katia and Maurice Krafft were killed by a pyroclastic flow during the eruption, along with volcanologist Harry Glicken. The documentary premiered at Sundance in January 2022 and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. *Into the Inferno* is a separate film that also features the Kraffts’ legacy.
