Which 2021 album collected 53 cover versions of songs from Metallica’s The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

The Metallica Blacklist is the 2021 album containing 53 cover versions of songs from The Black Album.

Released on September 10, 2021, it was created as part of the album’s 30th-anniversary celebration. More than 50 artists contributed interpretations in styles ranging from rock and metal to pop, country, hip-hop, and electronic music. The project demonstrated how widely the original songs had traveled beyond their initial genre audience.

The collection is not a remix of Metallica’s 1991 recordings and is not a live album. Each participating artist recorded a new version of a Black Album song. The project also accompanied a remastered edition and expanded box set of the original album.

Profits from The Metallica Blacklist were donated to Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation and charities selected by the contributing artists. Its title intentionally echoes the fan nickname of the source album while identifying the project as a set of reinterpretations.
