Which 2015 stock-market crash began after China’s Shanghai Composite peaked in June and then plunged?

The story behind the answer

The 2015 stock-market crash that followed the Shanghai Composite’s June peak was the Chinese stock-market crash.

China’s Shanghai Composite Index reached a five-year high on 12 June 2015 after a powerful rally fueled by retail participation, margin borrowing and expectations of continued economic growth. It then fell rapidly, losing more than 30% in roughly a month.

Chinese authorities responded with measures including trading suspensions, restrictions on share sales by major holders and efforts to support stock prices. The turbulence returned in 2016, when sharp falls triggered newly introduced circuit breakers on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges.

The episode is also described as the 2015–2016 Chinese stock-market turbulence. It was different from the 1997 Asian financial crisis because its center was China’s equity market rather than a region-wide currency collapse.
