The 2013 documentary about captive killer whales at SeaWorld is Blackfish.
Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, Blackfish centers on Tilikum, an orca captured near Iceland in 1983 and later held at SeaWorld Orlando. The film examines his captivity, his involvement in the deaths of three people, and the broader controversy surrounding keeping orcas in marine parks.
The documentary grew partly out of public attention after the 2010 death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau, who was killed by Tilikum. It combines interviews with former trainers, archival footage, and discussion of orca behavior, captivity, breeding, and stress. Blackfish premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and later received a BAFTA nomination for Best Documentary.
A common mix-up is The Cove, another influential marine-life documentary. The Cove focuses mainly on the capture and slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, Japan, while Blackfish focuses on captive killer whales and SeaWorld. The Whale is also wildlife-related but is a separate 2011 documentary about a young orca.
