The Borderlands video game series features the planet Pandora as its main setting. The series, developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K, combines first-person shooting with role-playing systems and extensive randomized loot.
In the Borderlands universe, Pandora is a harsh frontier world containing valuable alien technology and dangerous creatures. The search for a legendary Vault drives much of the first game’s plot and establishes the series’ recurring themes of corporate exploitation, treasure hunting, and survival.
Borderlands was released in 2009, followed by Borderlands 2 in 2012 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel in 2014. Later games expand the setting beyond Pandora, including Borderlands 3, which was released in 2019.
The game’s planet is not simply a direct retelling of the Greek myth. Its name evokes the myth’s association with hidden contents, danger, and consequences, while the series builds an original science-fiction setting around those ideas.
