The 2009 science-fiction film Avatar features a moon called Pandora. Directed by James Cameron, the film follows former Marine Jake Sully as he becomes involved with the Na’vi and the human mining operation on Pandora.
Pandora is a fictional moon orbiting the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. The moon’s dense forests, unusual wildlife, and luminous plant life form the setting for the film’s central conflict over resources and cultural survival.
This Pandora is not the woman from ancient Greek mythology. Cameron’s world-building borrows the name and its associations with an unfamiliar realm containing danger and wonder, but the film does not retell the Hesiod story.
Avatar was released in 2009 and became known for its extensive use of computer-generated imagery and 3D presentation. Its fictional moon is one of the most recognizable modern uses of the name.
