James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar introduced the fictional moon named Pandora.
Avatar is set largely on Pandora, a habitable moon orbiting the fictional gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. The film follows Jake Sully, a former Marine who operates a remotely controlled avatar body and becomes involved with the Na’vi inhabitants.
The moon’s name directly recalls the mythological Pandora, but the film’s setting is science fiction rather than a retelling of the Greek story. Pandora is portrayed as a biologically interconnected ecosystem with distinctive wildlife, floating mountains, and a valuable mineral called unobtanium.
Avatar was written and directed by James Cameron and became a major commercial and technological milestone. Its use of stereoscopic 3D and performance-capture techniques helped make Pandora one of the most recognizable fictional environments in modern cinema.
