Juno is the 2007 independent film about a pregnant teenager that won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The screenplay was written by Diablo Cody, whose sharp dialogue and unconventional viewpoint helped make the film a major success.
Directed by Jason Reitman, Juno stars Elliot Page as a Minnesota high-school student facing an unplanned pregnancy. The story follows Juno as she considers adoption, navigates changing relationships, and confronts decisions usually associated with adulthood. Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, Allison Janney, and J. K. Simmons also appear.
Cody wrote the screenplay in about seven weeks after producer Mason Novick encouraged her to create a sample script. She drew on stories from adoptees and birth parents, a friend's experience, and details from her own high-school life. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2007.
At the 80th Academy Awards in 2008, Cody won Best Original Screenplay. Juno also received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress. It earned more than $232 million worldwide against a budget of roughly $6.5 million.
