The 2006 film Quinceañera won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
Written and directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, the film follows Magdalena, a teenager in Los Angeles whose planned quinceañera becomes complicated by family and personal revelations.
The film premiered at Sundance in 2006, where its two awards brought attention to its independent production and Latino-centered story. Sony Pictures Classics later distributed it in the United States.
The film’s title refers to the celebration, but its plot is broader than the party itself. It examines family relationships, identity, sexuality, religion, and community in Echo Park. It should not be confused with a documentary or with the general cultural tradition.
