Frank Wedekind created Lulu, the character adapted in the film Pandora's Box.
Wedekind was a German playwright whose Lulu story appears in the plays Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box. G. W. Pabst's 1929 film combines material from those dramas and presents Louise Brooks as Lulu. The film's title therefore refers to Wedekind's theatrical work as well as the older Pandora tradition.
Wedekind's writing often challenged conventional ideas about sexuality, morality, and bourgeois society. Lulu's relationships and the reactions she provokes made the character especially controversial on stage and screen. The character is not the same as Hesiod's Pandora, despite the shared title and the theme of consequences.
Wedekind lived from 1864 to 1918. His Lulu plays later influenced opera, film, theater, and visual culture, including Alban Berg's unfinished opera Lulu, which was based on the same dramatic material.
