Which 19th-century celestial object was named Pandora after the Greek myth?

The story behind the answer

Asteroid 55 Pandora was named after the Greek mythological figure Pandora.

The asteroid is a main-belt object discovered by the American astronomer George Mary Searle on 10 September 1858 at the Albany Observatory in New York. It received the name Pandora, continuing the tradition of assigning mythological names to many asteroids discovered during the nineteenth century.

The number 55 is its permanent minor-planet designation, assigned according to the order in which the object received a number. It is not the fifty-fifth object discovered overall; numbering conventions reflect the sequence of successful orbit determination and recognition.

Asteroid 55 Pandora should not be confused with Pandora, a moon of Saturn, or with the fictional world in the film Avatar. Those objects share the name but are separate subjects. The asteroid is a rocky minor planet in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
