Answer
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Answer
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
The 1998 Nintendo 64 game that lets players pilot Rebel starfighters is Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.
Developed by Factor 5 and LucasArts, Rogue Squadron is an arcade-style flight-action game centered on the Rebel Alliance unit commanded by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles. Its missions are set mainly between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, as the squadron forms and fights the Galactic Empire.
Players fly vehicles such as X-wing starfighters, Y-wings, A-wings, and snowspeeders across combat missions on planets and in the atmosphere. The game was inspired partly by the snowspeeder sequence in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, which had shown the potential for a dedicated Star Wars flight game.
Rogue Squadron is sometimes confused with Star Wars: Battle for Naboo, a later spiritual successor featuring Naboo forces, or with the X-Wing series, which focuses more heavily on space simulation. Rogue Squadron was released for Nintendo 64 and Windows in December 1998 and was among the earliest games to use the console’s Expansion Pak.
