Which 1997 song by White Town became a UK and US one-hit wonder built around a sample from a 1932 composition?

The story behind the answer

White Town’s 1997 song “Your Woman” became a UK and US one-hit wonder built around a sample from a 1932 composition.

White Town was the recording project of Jyoti Prakash Mishra, who recorded the music largely by himself. “Your Woman” uses a prominent trumpet sample from “My Woman,” a 1932 song associated with Al Bowlly and Ray Noble’s orchestra. The sample gives the track its instantly recognizable muted-brass opening.

The single reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and number 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its success was notable because White Town was essentially a one-person project operating from a home-recording setup rather than a conventional full band.

The title is often confused with the sampled song because both contain the word “woman.” They are separate works: “My Woman” supplied the musical source, while “Your Woman” added new lyrics, electronics and a different lyrical perspective.
