Which 1995 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was written by Carol Shields?

The story behind the answer

Carol Shields wrote The Stone Diaries, which won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Published in 1993, the novel presents the fictional autobiography of Daisy Goodwill Flett. It follows her life from birth in Manitoba through marriage, motherhood, work, travel, aging, and death. Shields uses diaries, family records, letters, photographs, obituaries, and other documentary forms to question how an ordinary life is assembled into a story.

The book won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1995. Shields was born in the United States but became a Canadian citizen, and the novel is closely associated with both Canadian and broader North American literary traditions.

A frequent mix-up is with The Stone Angel, a 1964 novel by Canadian writer Margaret Laurence. Another different book, The Blind Assassin, won the 2000 Booker Prize for Margaret Atwood. Neither title is the Pulitzer-winning novel by Shields.
