“I’m Too Sexy” was the debut single by the English band Right Said Fred, formed by brothers Richard and Fred Fairbrass with guitarist Rob Manzoli. The song uses a deliberately boastful, spoken-sung performance over a sparse dance beat. Its exaggerated fashion-model persona made the recording playful rather than a straightforward romantic or club song.
The single reached number one in the United States in February 1992 after first becoming a major hit in the United Kingdom. It also topped charts in several other countries. Right Said Fred had further UK successes, including “Deeply Dippy” and “Don’t Talk Just Kiss.” Those releases did not reproduce the group’s US Hot 100 impact. In the American chart context, “I’m Too Sexy” is therefore the trio’s defining—and only number-one—hit.
