Which 1990 song by the Divinyls became the Australian band’s only US top-40 hit?

The story behind the answer

The Divinyls’ 1990 song “I Touch Myself” became the Australian band’s only US top-40 hit.

The song was written by Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett, guitarist Mark McEntee, and American songwriters Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg. Its title and lyrics use direct language about sexual desire, while the production presents the subject as a polished rock-pop hook.

“I Touch Myself” reached number four on the Australian Singles Chart and number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1991. It became the Divinyls’ signature song outside Australia and remains their best-known international recording.

The song is sometimes mistakenly described as a US number-one hit; it peaked at number four. In 2014, the I Touch Myself Project used the title to promote breast-health awareness after Amphlett’s death from breast cancer in 2013.
