Which 1990 song by Deee-Lite became a US one-hit wonder with the refrain “Groove is in the heart”?

The story behind the answer

Deee-Lite’s 1990 song “Groove Is in the Heart” became a US one-hit wonder and reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

The New York-based group combined house, funk, disco, and dance-pop influences. Vocalist Lady Miss Kier delivered the main performance, while the recording included notable contributions from Parliament-Funkadelic bassist Bootsy Collins and rapper Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest.

Its bright video, colorful styling, and retro-funk sound made the song a major early-1990s club and radio hit. The production also used samples, including elements associated with Herbie Hancock’s “Bring Down the Birds.”

Although Deee-Lite released additional music and had success in dance-oriented markets, “Groove Is in the Heart” was their only US Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 hit. It is consequently often included in American one-hit-wonder lists, even though the group had a broader club profile.
